After a night of prowling through the brambles and tall weeds a morning nap is well deserved. In the country, I don’t know of a house that doesn’t have at least two cats. They live outside and are basically free to roam, pounce and play as they choose. In return for the afternoon lunch scraps they hunt for mice, rats, lizards and snakes around the house. They are curious, happy, alert and quick, but when it is nap time the entire world turns off.
We have five cats living outside at the moment. They are all loved and more are on the way. After this next litter we will have the females spayed, which is something most villagers here would never dream of doing. Their solution is to bag up the kittens or puppies and drown them. Poison is another method. In reality, there are only two old women I can think of (that I know of) who have done that. One of them died last spring so hopefully the younger generations will be more accepting and caring of the animals that inhabit this beautiful island.
There is some consolation that in the comopoli (town) on the mainland, there is a group of caring people who collect donations to have the stray cats spayed and neutered. But they also have high speed internet. We are still behind on many levels. This is common in populations less than 600 in Greece. It doesn’t help that this is an island. Close as it is to the mainland, it is still more isolated than the villages across the way. For instance, there is probably a total of 20 computers on the island. As the worlds expand and contract simultaneously, the younger generations become more informed and hopefully this cruelty to animals will end.
